Hey Stuart,

Long time no see. Despite my lack of AS, I know precisely how you feel and have been on that road for about 3years now including the last couple of times you've seen me. Employment can be interesting, just watch out for the "redundancy" to come springing out of the box just when you think it's all going good.

Your cousin...

Hi,

I don't know you personally, nor do I know how you've approached previous interviews. Can I suggest two particular points however:

1. First, can I suggest bringing up and explaining your situation to potential employers early on in the application process. When to do so is a decision you'll have to make, and you may feel that with certain employers earlier/later disclosure is needed compared to other organizations. Sure, you may tire of explaining your condition repeatedly. But you may be surprised just how accommodating most employers are if you have made disclosure of your situation early, in an open and honest way. In fact, you may even be able to convince them to skip the interview process and put more emphasis on the technical portion of the process.

2. Second, you may want to focus on positions that have a heavier research emphasis, since some of these positions may allow you work mainly autonomously, without a lot of unnecessary social interaction. Sure, a lot of these positions are within academia, but they exist outside of this field as well. Jokes about research and development in this country aside, I'm positive there are quite a few positions in the embedded industry for people of your particular skill set. (There probably are a lot less R&D positions within IT however).

Stuart, you are mistaken if you believe that any disadvantages imposed by an underlying condition of yours somehow outweighs just how apparent your technical abilities are to others.

well I'm not a social blogger, commenter or even ircer. You're a great bloke when I met you and you still are now undoubtedly. Your time, effort, patience, persistence (and probably a few others) are your limited resources so treat them like the embedded computers you're good at, prioritize and cull the stuff out of your life that preclude it being useful. Don't ditch the computer, the upgrade path isn't really worth it.

Your brief encounters with all the people around you have a profound effect. Please don't leave us with the heartless fucks, they are far too common as it is. Your passion, caring, and understanding nature make you amongst the most worthy people to walk this earth.

Hey,
If you ever need someone to yell at, vent to or to talk to, you know where to find me. I for one, don't see why you should have to play the socialite game in order to get anywhere, It is a game I have always tried to avoid, and it has cost me and continues to do so. There are still those who care, despite the ignorance and indifference that is rife and spreading exponentially in humanity today.

As a sidepoint, I think that some employer should place you on a trial period, instead of forcing you through the interview process, IMHO I think this will allow you to have a much better chance at succeeding in finding employment.

I offer my support, if you want it ...
